Ryan believes furniture is not a disposable item and should be enjoyed from one generation to the next.
Ryan’s design priorities are user friendliness, clean lines, and pleasing proportions while maintaining structural integrity. Ideas germinate in the sketch book, then migrate to full scale drawings. Challenging aspects of the deign may be mocked up. Wood is carefully selected. Then the piece is started and allowed to evolve as it progresses. Ryan’s enjoys collaborating with clients, and sharing their joy as a project comes to life.
Ryan started spending time in his garage about eight years ago. Things started getting interesting, and bunkhausDESIGN was born. Despite being the son of a wood-shop teacher, and the grandson of a furniture upholsterer, Ryan pursued a career as a Chartered Accountant. Ryan came to craft later in life when he discovered the joy of making something with his own bare hands.
Ryan attended the Inside Passage School of Fine Cabinetmaking Artisan program, as a foundation, then started building and exploring. Ryan creates unique, heirloom furniture in his studio in North Vancouver using domestic hardwoods. The vision of bunkhausDESIGN is to help create an inspirational home for every customer, where anyone using well made furniture does so with a smile.
