Tara Lee Bennett is a paper artist who lives and works in Vancouver, British Columbia. Originally from Africa, Bennett lived in Australia for several years where she attended the Enmore Design Center in Sydney, Australia. Her popular mini plant series led to projects with Urban Outfitters, Tide and Today’s Parent. After moving to Canada, Bennett co-founded THRIVE Art Studio, a global membership community of female visual artists. Her newest series Taking Flight is infused with images of growth and renewal reflecting both the personal and professional journeys of her life.
Tara Lee Bennett recreates her world in paper. Meticulously she draws, cuts and assembles seemingly, impossibly too-small scraps of paper into elaborate creations that are intricate and time consuming. Bennett’s choice of paper is deliberate. As a medium, paper has endless possibilities because it is a material that is easily accessible yet can be endlessly and extravagantly transformed and it is this dichotomy Bennett celebrates. Her new series, Taking Flight, harnesses a mostly monochrome aesthetic which highlights the delicacy of her cuts. With this new series, Bennett pivots away from her older, plant-based body of work yet still embraces the theme of growth. She challenges us to come along with her on this new journey and we can only imagine where it will lead.
